My First Month at Gordon Advisors
July 26, 2017 by Gordon Advisors
My name is Jackie McDonald and I’ve recently started a new position with Gordon Advisors. Today actually marks my one-month anniversary with the Gordon family. I say family instead of saying “one month with Gordon Advisors” because from the first interview I had with our Chief Operating Officer, Jeff, I could tell that there was something different about Gordon Advisors. Something… familiar, almost like being with family and I know a thing or two about working with family – I came to Gordon from a CPA firm where my mother-in-law was the owner.
Nervous was an understatement for how I felt, I walked into this gorgeous, newly renovated building where your footsteps echoed throughout the hallway, into a beautiful new office with people dressed as professional as it gets.
During my interviews Jeff brought in two accountants who were newer to the company and around my age, for me to ask any questions I had about the company. I’ve never experienced anything like this before, it was as though I was doing the interviewing, I could ask the questions I wanted without any pressure. Both of the ladies were extremely nice, answered all my questions, they made me laugh and feel less nervous. Both women are people I like to go to lunch with, go out of my way to say hi to, they are easy to talk to and make work fun. And truly this applies for everyone in the company.
On my first day everyone (60 employees) already knew my name, I had at least 5 people stop by my office to introduce themselves and ask how my first day was going. It wasn’t overwhelming and having everyone come to my office was more relaxed versus a 60-on-one introduction. This continued onto my second week, third week and today I am still asked how things are going and if I’m settled into my office. One of our principals, Hannah, asked how things were going and I responded “Great! Everyone is so nice!” and she replied with a comment that will always stick with me. Hannah said, “I remember thinking the same thing when I first started, I thought it would eventually wear off but here I am 12 years later and it hasn’t”.
I came to Gordon to grow. Grow with the company, grow with the Gordon family and grow as an individual. I came here because Gordon Advisors was named one of the 101 Best & Brightest companies to work for. I came to Gordon because we are the 14th largest public accounting firm in Metro Detroit and we want to grow, we want to be the 13th, then 12th, then 11th, and so on.
It’s clear how much I love the company I work for because I haven’t even mentioned my background or what my job is at Gordon! I am our new marketing and business development coordinator. I’ve recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of arts in business administration with a major in marketing. I’ve worked for a marketing company for 8 years, and as I said I’ve worked for my mother-in-law’s CPA Firm.
I love Gordon, I absolutely love the people and I love coming into work every day.
